Anonymous asked: I love your hair, also you hair pretty eyes and your art is some of my favorite art ever

my favorite part of this is that you were too distracted by my hair to actually type ‘have’

(p.s. thank you)

Anonymous asked: Dear Emma, how did you first establish your style? Any tips or advice for a newer artist is appreciated. xx

HAHAHAHA

man if there’s one thing I do not have it’s a style! have you SEEN my body of work? I am literally still at that point where I’m just taking a stab at everything

and that’s okay! I want to refine my technique before I focus on individual style. probably the only thing I have a consistent style with is animals and that’s because I drew them like, god, what, every day 8th through 11th grade? it’s all just repetition and feeling your way through the dark and keeping what works and throwing out what doesn’t. experiment with proportion and line weight and coloring techniques but don’t try and force anything. the more art you make, and the more art you look at, the more obvious it becomes what feels right and what might not be working as effectively as you want it to.

probably one of the best things you can do is just surround yourself with a lot of good art, both your idols and friends at your skill level, because the cool thing about art is that everything you observe becomes like this big conglomerate unconscious source of inspiration you can draw upon and I dunno man I’ve had moments where I’ve drawn part of a picture and I’m like “whoa where did THAT come from” and it’s just a really fascinating feeling

I’m sorry if this is all vague and nebulous and generally unhelpful (and I’m sorry if I felt like I was rejecting your compliment I’m so rude sob) but there really is no answer except persistence. every popular artist has some little quirk that attracts people to their art and they probably had to work through TONS of pretty unremarkable stuff to get to that point. I have faith in you anon!!

Anonymous asked: Hi, Emma. P.S. Your links are broken.

haha yeah they’ve been broken since I switched back from a halloween url, I’ve been too lazy to fix ‘em

speaking of which I need a christmas url, help me out here guys

Anonymous asked: I hope you have a better day tomorrow

thank you anon I appreciate it ◡‿◡

Anonymous asked: In your opinion, is submitting to threadless worth it?

ah, I don’t know, it’s VERY easy to get discouraged and cynical about what gets high scores and what doesn’t. you’ve got to have pretty thick skin and learn not to take it personally. the threadless community definitely seems to gravitate towards either incredibly detailed and almost surreal illustrations or clean pop culture reference graphics. I wouldn’t deliberately try to cater to either, though. make a design you’re proud of regardless of its reception and that way you’ll always get something out of it. don’t just make a drawing and slap it on a t-shirt, though - try to imagine something that actually looks best in the form of a t-shirt (that was my mistake with my first design). in general, just a pretty picture won’t cut it. ask yourself “would people concievably want to wear this around on an article of clothing?”

I would say it’s worth it because I’ve learned a lot from it, though. I intend to submit more designs in the future because I like illustrating my ideas and I’m convinced I’ll get it right someday. plus, half my wardrobe is from threadless, haha. be persistent! oh, and drop me a link if you go through with it, I’d be glad to promote you.

Anonymous asked: Did you get the bedroom you wanted?

hahaha sort of

my roommate took the right bedroom like I anticipated, but as it turned out, our floor plan was inverted, so I got the bigger closet. her room is a bit wider though and I have a much smaller wardrobe of clothes anyway so honestly we’d probably be better off with the opposite rooms, but oh well. it’s not a big deal.

why do you ask? (and why anon?)

Anonymous asked: what ever happened to chenoa

she remade! I was all ready to post her url when I thought WAIT maybe she remade for privacy reasons or something I dunno. if you come off anon I can probably give it to you
